World Cup Taiwan kicks off to strengthen sports diplomacy

New Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) A football festival aimed at strengthening Taiwan's relationship with countries around the world kicked off Saturday in New Taipei with 18 teams and a special exhibition match between Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) officials and international diplomats.

World Cup Taiwan 2021, held under the theme "One Sport, One World," featured around 400 players from 25 countries playing in 18 teams, which will vie for the event title over the weekend at Fu Jen Catholic University Football Field.

At the event's opening ceremony, Taiwan Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Tah-ray Yui (俞大㵢) said the event has been held for eight consecutive years and used to be known as Copa America Taiwan before the name was changed to World Cup Taiwan 2021 to better showcase the participation of players from different regions and countries.
